Sacraments at St Nicholas

Baptism

Requirements for having a child Baptized:

·         The child must be 6 years old or younger.

·         At least one parent (or legal guardian) must give consent.

·         There needs to be a commitment to raise the child in the Catholic Church.

·         Parents and sponsors must attend a Baptismal Prep Class, offered on the 2nd Tuesday at St. John the Baptist in English, or on the 4th Monday at St. Nicholas in Spanish, both are at 7:00 pm.  If a class has been attended at another Catholic Church in the past 2 years is not required to the class, but a letter from the church certifying the attendance in the class must be presented no later than one week before the Baptism.

·         It is necessary to provide a copy of the birth certificate.

·         Must attend a Baptism Preparation Class – please refer to the details below.

Requirements for Godparents:

·         You may have 1 or 2 Godparents, no more than 2.  If there are two, they must be one male and one female.

·         Godparents must be over the age of 16, received their Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Communion, Confirmation).

·         Godparents must be Catholics in good standing, practicing their faith and not living in a situation contrary to Catholic teaching (ie, living with someone and not married).

·         If married, Godparents must have been married in the Catholic Church.

·         Godparents must provide Confirmation and Marriage Certificates.

·         If Godparents are from a different Catholic parish, that parish must send us a letter indicating they are members in good standing.

·         If Godparents want to take the Baptism class at another parish they must provide a letter stating they took the class no later than one week before the Baptism.

·         If there is only one Catholic Godparent, there may be 1 non-Catholic Christian witness.  They are a witness to the Baptism, but are not a Godparent and are not asked to assume the responsibilities of a Godparent.  Christian witnesses must also be Baptized.  There must be one Catholic Godparent.

·         Must attend a Baptism Preparation Class – please refer to the details below.

Baptism Preparation Classes:

The parents of the child to be Baptized and the Godparents must attend a Baptismal Preparation Class, either through St Nicholas, St John the Baptist in Johnstown or through their local parish.  If the classes are attended at a different parish we must receive some written confirmation from that parish that the classes were attended and completed for each person that attended.   Classes must have been taken within the last 2 years.

Registration is required before attending a class.  Classes offered are:

  • English Baptism classes - second Tuesdays of every month at 7:00 pm at St. John the Baptist, 1000 Country Acres Dr, Johnstown
